The Laniakea Supercluster (Laniakea; also called Local Supercluster, Local SCl, or Lenakaeia) is the galaxy supercluster that is home to the Milky Way and approximately 100,000 other nearby galaxies. It was defined in September 2014, when a group of astronomers including R. Brent Tully of the University of Hawaii and Hélène Courtois of the University of Lyon published a new way of defining superclusters according to the relative velocities of galaxies. The new definition of the local supercluster subsumes the prior defined local supercluster, the Virgo Supercluster, now an appendage. Laniakea or Lenakaeia is a Hawaiian word that means 'immense heaven', 'open skies', or 'wide horizons'.
In the same way that the science of cymatics functions to make visible the vibrational phenomena of sound, we attempt to articulate a cascading cosmic mapping powered by sound and digital dance in a new VR development for the Laniakea project with composer Corrina Bonshek and collaborating musicians. Artists of Australia, Taiwan, Spain and Aotearoa New Zealand have combined their skills to co-create this response to Super-Cluster Galaxies. In our bespoke VR, the dance, music and light offer a delicate interstellar out-picturing and sonic journey motivated by Laniakea Galaxies. Today we are excited to share the new film and VR editions which feature artists Janessa Dufty, Jasmine Chen, Michael Askill, Anna Whitaker, Patxi Araujo, Jac Grenfell, and Bonshek with Daniel Belton.
